The county has been rolling out the red carpet and signaling the sirens for its newest top police officer, Malik Aziz who was officially named the chief of police earlier this month. As part of getting to know everyone, the District 5 police station co-hosted a meet & greet for Aziz alongside a community walk on July 19.

District 5, located in Clinton, sponsored the event as hosted by District 9 Councilmember Sydney J. Harrison; Major Cedric Dickerson, the station’s top commander; and the nonprofit 4EVER Unified, Inc.

During a warm Monday, Chief Aziz spent his evening getting to know the residents, who reside in the Accokeek, Aquasco, Baden, Brandywine, Cheltenham, Clinton, Croom, Eagle Harbor, Fort Washington, Joint Base Andrews, Piscataway, and Upper Marlboro neighborhoods.

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks; Councilman Harrison, and At-Large Member Calvin S. Hawkins II, all remarked on Chief Aziz’s goals for the county which includes having a positive relationship between the police and the community.

Chief Aziz started his career with the Dallas Police Department 29 years ago, serving as deputy chief for nearly a decade. He’s also the former executive director of the National Black Police Association and is widely seen as a reformer and strong proponent of community policing.

“Policing in this most challenging time today seems to be negative. It feels different. I’m looking at the positive on how we can progress policing and embrace community and move forward,” said Chief Aziz.
