Goldson: ‘Time For My Next Journey’

Goldson: ‘Time For My Next Journey’

Dr. Monica Goldson Announces Retirement

Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO Dr. Monica Goldson shared an announcement of retirement Jan. 5.

“After much thought, prayer and discussions with my family, I have decided that at the end of this school year, I will move on to the next journey in my life: retirement.”

In her role as CEO, Goldson led a school system over 131,000 students. During her watch, the school system improved in overall attendance and graduation rates while growing in population. Goldson led the system in expanding diverse programming and initiatives to be more inclusive of the ethnic diversity of county schools. She was also at the center of a recently budgeted initiative to build six new schools in the county.

One of the most significant distinctions Goldson held from her predecessors has been consistency and longevity. Although she only served as CEO for five years (since 2018), Goldson, a native Prince Georgian, created a vision for the schools and worked to deliver on it. Several previous CEOs and PGCPS leaders rarely remained in position more than two years since the early 2000s.

“Since 1991, I have truly enjoyed serving the students and parents of Prince George’s County Public Schools,” she said. “It has been an absolute honor to lead over 131,000 students in the place I call home.”
