Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks held her campaign kick-off rally for U.S. Senate on May 10 in New Carrollton.
A lifelong Marylander, surrounded by family, friends, sorority sisters and well-established supporters from across the state, Alsobrooks outlined how she’ll continue to fight for families like those she grew up with and worked for throughout her life and career.
“I'm proud to say that I am running for the U.S. Senate because you deserve a senator who not only fights for you, and you know I will fight for you. You deserve a senator who not only fights for you, but who thinks like you,” Alsobrooks said before a crowd of cheering supporters.
Alsobrooks made her successful mark as the county’s first woman county executive. Winning her first term in 2018 by landslide numbers, the popular county leader was immediately faced with on-the-job challenges caused by the federal government shut down (hundreds of county residents are federal employees and were negatively impacted by the shutdown). Following the shutdown, the COVID-19 pandemic became the next stern test of the Alsobrooks Administration. Her success in managing the county through crisis and growing its economy earned Alsobrooks the respect of her contemporaries across the state.
Alsobrooks distinguished herself in the senate race as a candidate with a track record as a fighter for her constituents and who is relatable to voters. “[You deserve] a senator who looks, and who lives like the people they’re supposed to represent. I recognize today, I’m on this stage and I tell you I regard it as a great honor. I’m not here alone. Instead, I’m on this stage and I'm happy to celebrate the women who have made it possible for me to be here.”
Alsobrooks invoked the spirit and work of Maryland women who led the Free State throughout history.
“I'm honored to not only be a lifelong Marylander, but also for the opportunity to represent the state that’s the home of one of the baddest freedom fighters in history, Harriet Tubman. Celebrate suffragist, Mary Church Terrell, who said we owe each other the beauty of lifting as we climb onward and upward we go, struggling and striving so we can all do better.”
The county executive went on to recall the iconic Congresswoman Gladys Noon Spellman.
“I celebrate women like Congresswoman Gladys Noon Spellman who proved to women everywhere that we too could lead. These visionary women made it possible for me to serve in elective office these past 12 years: first as your state’s attorney, and now as Prince George's County’s executive. I have worked hard to honor their legacy and to continue to earn your trust.”
“The truth is, I've dedicated my life to public service,” Alsobrooks said. “The vision for the future is bright in Maryland, and I have to tell you, it’s only getting brighter.”
