A Brief History of Maryland Day

Maryland Day is more than a campus celebration—it honors a significant moment in the state's history. The observance dates back to March 25, 1634, when the first European settlers landed in the Province of Maryland, making it the third English colony established in British North America.

These settlers, about 150 in number, arrived aboard The Ark and The Dove. After departing from Gravesend on the Thames River and collecting Jesuit priests from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, they landed at St. Clement’s Island in the Potomac River. This marked the beginning of Maryland’s colonial history. Following their initial landing, the colonists moved on to establish the capital at St. Mary’s City, located near the mouth of the Potomac River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay.

The formal observance of Maryland Day began in 1903, when the State Board of Education designated a day during the school year to focus on Maryland’s history. In 1916, the Maryland General Assembly officially recognized March 25 as a legal holiday, encouraging education and appreciation of the state's rich heritage. The celebration is recognized in April at the University of Maryland.

Whether you're a local resident, a history enthusiast, or simply looking for a day of exploration and fun, Maryland Day 2025 at the University of Maryland is the perfect way to connect with the past, present, and future.
