Prince George’s County Secures Over $183 Million in State Capital Funding

Prince George’s County Secures Over $183 Million in State Capital Funding

Major Wins Will Support Healthcare, Education, Economic Revitalization, and Working Families

LARGO, MD — In a landmark legislative session that concluded with resounding victories for local communities, Prince George’s County emerged as a major beneficiary of the 2025 Maryland General Assembly. The County secured over $183 million in state capital funding, reinforcing its commitment to equitable development across sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, housing, and tax relief for working families.

Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson

With a forward-looking agenda and relentless advocacy in Annapolis, Prince George’s County leaders pushed for and obtained vital state support to enhance critical infrastructure, modernize public facilities, and uplift residents across all income brackets. Acting County Executive Tara H. Jackson, who helmed the effort with focus and resolve, heralded the achievements as a testament to targeted, resident-first policymaking.

"These wins represent what happens when we stay focused on delivering real results for our residents," said Jackson. "We went to Annapolis with a clear vision — to secure funding for healthcare access, invest in our schools, create economic opportunity, and protect working families. I’m proud to say we are bringing home the resources to continue doing just that."

Transforming Healthcare Access

At the heart of the County's legislative victories lies a robust commitment to healthcare equity. With more than $38 million dedicated to healthcare infrastructure and services, the funding marks a transformative moment in ensuring residents can access top-tier medical care close to home.

Among the flagship investments:

  • $20 million for a new Obstetrical Care Tower at Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center, designed to enhance maternal and infant health outcomes.

  • $10 million to modernize infrastructure at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, bolstering emergency and inpatient care capacity.

  • $5 million for a new Adventist HealthCare facility in Fort Washington, expanding comprehensive community health services.

  • $2.9 million for Greater Baden Medical Services to establish a new Ritchie Station Health Center, enhancing primary care access.

  • Smaller but crucial allocations include $130,000 for an Apheresis Machine at University of Maryland Capital Region Health and $100,000 for a new Urology Suite and operating room at MedStar.

These investments reflect a strategic priority for Prince George’s County: dismantling long-standing health disparities and building a modern, community-rooted healthcare network.

Education and Youth: A Long-Term Commitment

Education remained a cornerstone of the County’s capital investment strategy, with over $44 million allocated to build and renovate educational facilities and expand opportunities for young people.

The largest share, $33 million, will fund school construction and modernization across 13 schools, including the full replacement of Suitland High School and the development of new campuses for Northern Adelphi High and Cool Spring Elementary.

Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) also saw major gains:

  • $11 million was secured for renovations to Marlboro Hall, a centerpiece of PGCC’s academic and student services infrastructure.

  • An additional $376,000 was allocated through the Facilities Renewal Grant to ensure long-term sustainability and safety across PGCC campuses.

Together, these investments support the County’s aim to ensure every young person has access to a world-class education, from pre-K to higher education.

Economic Revitalization and Transportation Innovation

The County also scored significant wins in revitalizing key economic corridors and improving local transportation infrastructure — crucial to driving long-term economic growth.

Key highlights include:

  • $6.2 million for the revitalization of the Bowie Race Course Training Center and Rosecroft Raceway, both historic sites poised to be reborn as engines of economic development.

  • $5 million for improvements to the College Park Airport, the oldest continuously operating airport in the U.S., positioning it for a new era of aviation and aerospace innovation.

  • $1 million to support affordable housing near the Glenridge Purple Line Station, aligning transportation and housing development.

  • $3 million toward the "210 on the Park" affordable housing project in the Blue Line Corridor, part of a broader vision to create mixed-use, transit-connected communities.

These projects are part of a larger economic strategy aimed at increasing property values, attracting new businesses, and promoting walkable, vibrant neighborhoods.

Tax Relief for Working Families

Beyond brick-and-mortar projects, Prince George’s County leaders fought for a crucial policy win: tax relief for middle-income residents. The state’s new income tax plan originally threatened to raise taxes on thousands of County residents by eliminating itemization for those earning under $200,000 annually. Through determined advocacy, the County successfully preserved itemization for this group.

"Too often, working families bear the brunt of policy decisions made far from home," said Acting County Executive Jackson. "This fix ensures that middle-class Prince Georgians can keep more of what they earn — and reflects our commitment to building a more equitable future for all who call this County home."

Strategic Vision and Community Impact

The 2025 session highlights what is possible when local and state government collaborate to serve shared constituencies. Prince George’s County not only articulated its priorities clearly but also aligned its requests with data-driven needs and community voices. The result: one of the most successful funding sessions in County history.

What distinguishes this year's accomplishments is not just the dollar amount but the breadth and depth of the impact. From healthcare to housing, from education to equitable tax policy, the investments target systemic challenges that have long hindered the County's full potential.

Moreover, the County's leadership has signaled that these victories are a foundation, not a finish line. Long-term planning continues around climate resilience, digital equity, workforce development, and public safety — with the lessons of the 2025 session serving as a blueprint for future progress.

Looking Ahead

As Prince George’s County looks toward the future, its 2025 legislative wins offer a clear roadmap for inclusive growth and community resilience. County leaders are already preparing for the next legislative cycle, aiming to build on this momentum.

Community groups, nonprofit organizations, and civic leaders are being invited into a broader dialogue to ensure that implementation is as inclusive and effective as the funding efforts. Public engagement efforts are being planned to track progress and keep residents informed about how these investments are transforming neighborhoods.

"The work doesn’t stop with a check," said Jackson. "It’s about how we turn these dollars into lasting change for our children, our families, and our future."

Prince George’s County's performance in the 2025 legislative session reflects not just political savvy but a renewed sense of purpose: to make every dollar count for those who need it most. And for the residents of this dynamic, growing county, the promise of a more equitable, prosperous future just got a little closer to reality.
