Council Member Fisher to Host Senior Scam Prevention Workshop

Online scams are becoming more efficient and more believable every day. And they are getting away with millions in savings from senior citizens.

In 2024, more than 3,2000 Marylanders over 60 lost a combined $80 million to scams, according to the FBI. The Federal Trade Commission reported 40,000 fraud reports in Maryland in 2024, with older adults reporting close to $4.9 billion in fraud losses.

Council Member Wanika Fisher (District 2) is partnering with the Maryland Attorney General’s Office to host a virtual scam prevention workshop for senior citizens on Saturday, September 20, from 11 AM to 1 PM.

“Our seniors have worked hard all their lives and deserve peace of mind in their golden years, not living in fear of being taken advantage of,” said Council Member Fisher. “This workshop is about equipping our community with the knowledge and tools to spot scams, shut them down, and stay safe.”

The number of senior citizens who fall victim to fraud, scams, and financial exploitation is steadily increasing each year. This workshop aims to provide helpful tips and resources to as many senior citizens as possible, so they can recognize threats and proactively protect themselves from harm.
