Blegay Confirmed
Former District 6 Councilmember Steps In As New At-Large County Councilmember

The process was swift. In a matter of minutes, District 6 County Councilmember Wala Blegay was unanimously voted in as an at-large member of the council on Jan 6.
Her term as an at-large member begins immediately and will end on Dec. 5, 2026.
The council will choose Blegay’s replacement in District 6 because of the timing of Calvin Hawkins’ resignation. Hawkins held the at-large seat before resigning to take a position with the Braveboy Administration.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the residents of Prince George’s County for the trust and support you’ve shown me throughout my tenure on the Council,” Hawkins said in a news release announcing his resignation. “Serving on this body has been a profound honor, and I take immense pride in what we’ve achieved together.”
Blegay, known as a political fighter, said she will elevate her efforts in attracting resources and results for county residents.
“We are going to push hard,” she said at the swearing-in. “We are going to fight for all the things that Prince George’s County wants because we are the best place to live in the state of Maryland.”
Blegay also gave a respectful nod to the tone of her predecessor, Calvin Hawkins, saying that she would continue in the spirit he set as The People’s Champion.
“I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to Councilmember Calvin Hawkins, who has long been known as the People’s Champion. His legacy of service, accessibility, and people-first leadership has shaped Prince George’s County in meaningful ways,” Blegay said in an earlier statement.
“I am honored to have been unanimously appointed to serve as Prince George’s County Councilmember At-Large, a role that allows me to expand the work I have proudly done on behalf of District 6 to serve residents across our entire County.”
