Braveboy Announces World Cup Festival
The planned Prince George’s County World Cup Festival is poised to bring international energy, cultural pride, and economic opportunity to the heart of the county this summer as local leaders prepare for a two-day celebration tied to the global excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup.
Announced by County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy, the free festival will take place June 12 and 13 at the Prince George’s County Sports and Learning Complex in partnership with EagleSport Holdings. Organizers say the event is designed not only as a community celebration, but also as a strategic economic boost for local entrepreneurs, entertainers, and vendors.
The festival arrives during a historic moment for soccer in the United States. The upcoming FIFA World Cup marks the first time the tournament has been hosted in America since 1994, generating renewed excitement nationwide and positioning the Washington metropolitan region as one of the sport’s major destinations. County leaders hope the festival will capitalize on that momentum while showcasing the county’s diversity and growing entertainment profile.
“This festival is a continuation of our commitment to providing meaningful experiences for our residents that also stimulate our local economy,” Braveboy said in the announcement. She emphasized that Prince George’s County’s multicultural population makes it an ideal location for an international soccer celebration.
The opening night on June 12 will feature a large-scale watch party for the USA vs. Paraguay FIFA World Cup match, complete with giant LED screens, concert-quality sound, live performances, food trucks, halftime entertainment, and appearances by professional athletes and cultural influencers.
Festivities continue June 13 with a Youth World Championship Tournament, where young athletes representing their countries of heritage will compete in matches celebrating the county’s international identity and deep community roots. Organizers say the event is intended to inspire future generations of soccer fans and athletes while creating lasting memories for families across the county.
