New Family Surgical Center Planned To Open
The Earl Family Continues The Tradition
Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center has announced a $10 million lead gift from the Earl family to establish the Earl Family Surgical Center, anchoring a $20 million Advanced Surgical Suite project that will expand and modernize surgical care in Annapolis and across the Eastern Shore. The initiative will add five state-of-the-art operating and procedural rooms, including a hybrid OR designed for advanced cardiovascular, neurovascular, and other complex interventions—improvements hospital leaders say will enhance patient safety, outcomes, efficiency, and access.
“Our family has long believed in LHAAMC’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and compassionate care,” said Matthew Earl, noting the gift reflects a long-standing partnership with the hospital. Mitch Cahan, MD, Chair of Surgery at Luminis Health, said the investment will bolster recruitment and retention of top surgical talent and deepen training for clinicians across the perioperative team.
The Earl family’s philanthropy at LHAAMC spans decades. In 2013, Jim and Sylvia Earl launched the James and Sylvia Earl Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning (SAIL) Center, a hands-on facility that advances clinical training and research to improve patient outcomes. The next generation—sons Matthew and Jimmy Earl, and Bridget Earl, widow of the late David Earl- remain active supporters of the center’s mission to elevate care through cutting-edge simulation and technology.
Catherine Maloney, President of LHAAMC and System COO, called the gift “visionary,” adding it will “strengthen surgical capabilities, foster innovation, and enhance care for patients and families well into the future.” Elizabeth Gross, Chief Development Officer, emphasized the broader call to action: “Every gift, regardless of size, plays a meaningful role in sustaining the high-quality care for which LHAAMC has been known for 124 years.”
The announcement follows continued national recognition for LHAAMC, including the Surgical Excellence Award from America’s 50 Best Hospitals, multiple high-performing ratings in surgical specialties from U.S. News & World Report, and a 15th consecutive “A” from The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade—making it the only hospital in Maryland to maintain straight A’s since 2018.
