Learn How to Shape the Future of Prince George’s County
If you've ever wondered how development decisions are made in Prince George's County—or wished you had a stronger voice in shaping your community—this fall offers an opportunity to do exactly that.
The Prince George's County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) has opened applications for the Fall 2026 session of its popular Neighborhood Planning Academy, a free seven-week educational program designed to help residents become informed advocates for their neighborhoods.
The virtual academy introduces participants to the fundamentals of urban planning, community engagement, sustainable development, and the public planning process. Whether you're a resident, municipal leader, nonprofit representative, or business owner, the program is designed to provide practical knowledge that helps participants understand how development decisions are made—and how they can make their voices heard.
"Strong communities are built when residents have a voice in the decisions that affect where they live, work, and play," said James Hunt, Acting Director of the M-NCPPC Prince George's County Planning Department. He noted that the academy helps create informed community leaders by providing practical planning knowledge and opportunities for meaningful civic engagement.
Since launching in 2023, the Neighborhood Planning Academy has graduated approximately 300 residents and community stakeholders through six successful cohorts. That growing network of graduates is helping strengthen conversations about future development throughout Prince George's County.
This year's fall cohort will meet virtually via Microsoft Teams on most Wednesday evenings from October 7 through November 18, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. One class will instead be held on Tuesday, November 10, because of the Veterans Day holiday. The program concludes with capstone project presentations that allow participants to showcase the planning knowledge and skills they have gained.
To ensure countywide representation, participants will be selected from each councilmanic district. Applications must be submitted by August 31, 2026, and space is limited.
