Burroughs Initiative Will Clear Bowie State Debt for District 8 Students
A new Prince George’s County initiative is set to remove a major financial barrier for Bowie State University students from District 8 by paying all of their outstanding balances owed directly to the university.
County Councilmember Edward Burroughs III will join Bowie State President Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, university leaders and student recipients on Monday, Sept. 21, to announce the debt-relief effort. The press conference will begin at 1 p.m. in the atrium of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center on Bowie State’s campus.

The initiative will assist currently enrolled District 8 students who carry unpaid university balances, as well as former returning students who have been unable to enroll because of earlier debt. It will also help a graduate whose unpaid balance has prevented the university from releasing a diploma.
The announcement will detail how the balances will be paid and how eligible District 8 students will benefit from initiative.
For students, even an institutional balance can place a college education on hold. An unpaid bill may block registration, interrupt progress toward a degree or prevent a graduate from receiving the credential needed to pursue employment and career advancement. By eliminating balances owed directly to Bowie State, the effort is designed to give affected students a clearer path to enrollment, continued study and graduation.
Organizers described the investment as an unprecedented step to eliminate university debt for District 8 students. Beyond providing immediate financial relief, the announcement highlights the role local leaders and institutions can play in helping residents complete their education and benefit from the degrees they have earned.
