My Family
Celebrating Black History Month With Wala Blegay’s Family
On This First Day of Black History Month, I recognize my Great Grandfather, Prince Momolu Massaquoi's collaboration with African American leaders. My Great Grandfather was my inspiration to be a dedicated grassroots leader. He was one of the first African indigenous diplomats serving for a decade as the Ambassador for Liberia to Germany during the 1920s. From his ability to mobilize the indigenous community in Liberia to become more active in the political process to working with leaders like Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Dubious on bridging the gap in the African Diaspora, he was a leader dedicated to improving communities of color not only in Liberia but in the United States.
Much like my great grandfather, I will be a leader bridging the gap between various communities and protecting the interest of my community, Prince George's County.
