Hoyer Statement On The 50th Anniversary Of Roe v. Wade
Hoyer: “House Dems Join Americans In Widespread Opposition To Efforts To Curtail Reproductive Freedom”
By Steny Hoyer // Congressman, 5th District, Democrat
"Fifty years ago today, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in Roe v. Wade, affirming women's constitutional right to make their own reproductive health-care decisions. Last year, however, a Republican-appointed majority on the Supreme Court infringed upon that right by overturning Roe. In doing so, they demonstrated a flagrant disregard not only for decades of legal precedent but also for Americans' most basic liberties. This radical decision ran against the interests and beliefs of a clear majority of the American people.
"House Democrats join Americans in widespread opposition to these efforts to curtail reproductive freedom. That's why we passed legislation to enshrine the Roe precedent in federal statute last Congress. Unfortunately, Republicans blocked that legislation's enactment. Even worse, their new House Majority has already passed legislation that further vilifies women who seek essential reproductive health services as well as the medical professionals who provide them. Democrats will continue to stand united in our resistance to these attempts to criminalize abortion and undermine reproductive freedom."
