Jackson: ‘This Year’s $5.4 Billion Proposed Budget Was Developed Under Challenging Economic Conditions’

By Tara Jackson // Acting Prince George’s County Executive

Dear Prince Georgians:

I am honored to share with you the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) budget, which reflects our commitment to maintaining essential services, investing in our communities, and ensuring the long-term financial health of Prince George’s County.

This year’s $5.4 billion proposed budget was developed under challenging economic conditions. The County faces a budget shortfall of $130-$170 million due to increased state-mandated costs and federal economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, we have worked hard to protect the programs and services that matter most to you—education, public safety, healthcare, and infrastructure—while exercising responsible fiscal management.

Key Investments in the FY26 Budget

  • Education & Youth Development – $2.83 billion for PGCPS, including $969 million from the County to meet and exceed Kirwan requirements. Funding for Pre-K, Prince George’s Community College, and school construction remains strong.

  •  Public Safety – $424.3 million for PGPD, supporting 110 new police recruits and expanding community policing. Fire & EMS will receive $314 million, including funding for 95 new recruits.

  • Health & Human Services – $143.7 million in health investments, including $24.9 million for mental health and addiction services.

  •  Infrastructure & Environmental Protection – $218.6 million for beautification, stormwater management, and climate resilience programs.

Economic Development & Affordable Housing – $50.5 million for infrastructure improvements, $34 million for trails and connectivity, and $20.2 million for affordable housing programs.

Balancing the Budget Responsibly

We know that fiscal responsibility is key to our County’s long-term success. While we have had to make some difficult decisions, we have ensured that critical services remain intact and that targeted investments will continue to move Prince George’s County forward.

This budget is the result of careful planning, community feedback, and a commitment to the values that make our county strong. We remain dedicated to providing high-quality services, keeping our neighborhoods safe, supporting economic growth, and investing in the well-being of all residents.

The FY26 proposed budget is now before the County Council for review, and I encourage you to stay engaged in this process. You can view the full budget online and participate in public hearings to make your voice heard.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we build a stronger, more resilient Prince George’s County together.

Yours in service,

Tara H. Jackson
