Fighting For Equality And Inclusion
Lift Every Voice: A Letter to the Editor To Premiere in Bowie in February 2024
Black History Month is just around the corner, and the Lift Every Voice event in Prince George’s County is a perfect story for the celebration of African American Heritage.
The full name of the stage play is Lift Every Voice: A Letter to the Editor. Viewers will be engrossed in this story as it follows a 12-year-old boy in the 1960’s South named Junebug. This boy learns of James Meredith’s attempt to enroll as the first African American at the University of Mississippi.
A local newspaper knows of this and one of their editors shows her distaste of integration. With this in mind, Junebug confronts these views, speaking out for equality and inclusion. This is an inspiring title, perfect for kids in grades 4 through 8 who are interested in themes surrounding Black History.
This play with music offers a pathway to understanding and compassion for young learners. Historical touchstones include the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Little Rock Nine, the Greensboro sit-ins, and the Civil Rights Movement.
