When It's Time to Chill

Prince George's County Government Cooling Centers

We wanted summer to get here, well - it's doing so a little early this year. While many are enjoying the over 90 degrees Fahrenheit weather, others are struggling. Special care and attention must be made to those most vulnerable to hyperthermia: the elderly, babies and toddlers, infirm, and even our pets. Prince George's County government has a safety plan.

Permanent M-NCPPC Cooling Center Locations

Cooling Centers are open to the general public. When the air quality heat index is predicted to be in the CODE ORANGE range for unhealthy or temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees, Prince George’s County residents may seek comfort in air-conditioned M-NCPPC community centers and senior centers, or Public Libraries for relief from the heat.

We ask that all residents check in with the Department of Parks and Recreation facility's front desk upon arrival.

Residents may also call 311 to get information about the Cooling Station locations in Prince George's County.

Weekday Hours: 10 am-8 pm
Weekend Hours: Open during Centers' normal business hours. Call the Centers' pages to confirm times.

• In the event of a Major Power Outage, Special Cooling Centers closest to the impacted area will be activated to provide residents with a cool and safe facility to seek relief from the heat. The hours of operation for special cooling centers will vary depending on the event and weather conditions.

• Any time Prince George’s County makes the decision to open Cooling Center(s) a news release will be issued listing the location and times of all Cooling Center sites. A news release will be coordinated with the Director of Communications for the County Executive’s Office, who will handle final distribution to the appropriate media outlets.

• The Department of Homeland Security, Office of Emergency Management shall be responsible for monitoring all air quality heat indexes to ensure proper steps are taken to assist citizens with health problems and to help those who have no ready access to a cool environment during dangerous high temperatures and air quality alert situations.
