PEPCO and KID Museum Team To Launch Go Green Design Challenge
By Kia Lisby
The Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) and KID Museum are teaming up to launch a family design challenge to promote sustainability and activate creative learning from Oct. 24 – 25.
PEPCO is the nation’s leading energy provider, will nearly 10 million customers. The company provides safe and reliable energy services to approximately 894,000 customers in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
KID Museum is the region’s pioneering experimental museum and educational maker space.
The KID Museum designs and delivers hands-on learning programs for youth in pre-K through middle school in partnership with educators and schools. KID Museum challenges the youth of today to be active makers, while building agency, confidence, and creative problem-solving skills.
Together, they have previously partnered, bringing maker learning to the community, which included KID Museum’s annual FutureFest, where PEPCO hosted free hands-on, sustainability-focused activities for the 12,000 attendees.
With sustainability goals in mind, PEPCO and KID Museum have come together again, to create the Go Green Design Challenge encouraging families to work together to design and create the prototype for an invention that will make homes more environmentally friendly. The purpose of the challenge is to teach children and adults about the value of sustainability while promoting maker skills and creative thinking.
The challenge will begin with a live video Oct. 24 providing challenge guidelines and inspiration. The video will also include a tour of PEPCO’s sustainable award-winning WaterShed Sustainability Center, by designer and builder, Scott Tjaden.
Families participating in the challenge are encouraged to use household materials to help design their prototype inventions or innovations. The designs can be either a redesign of an object they currently have at home or a completely new idea and design.
All entries must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. Oct. 25 to be featured in the virtual Design Showcase that will take place the following week. Entries will be automatically entered into a raffle of prizes as well.
KID Museum’s website will provide instructional skill-building videos for help.
