September is National Preparedness Month - Get Your Family Ready

As our nation continues to respond to COVID-19, it is more important than ever to be involved this September in the annual awareness that is National Preparedness Month, to promote family and community disaster planning now and throughout the year.

Prince George’s County Office of Emergency Management encourages all residents to adopt the following best practices to safeguard family members, friends, and communities during times of disasters or other significant events:

Register for Notify Me Prince George’s – The County’s notification service for residents and businesses, participants will receive notices, updates and instructions in the event of major emergencies or disasters pertaining to imminent threats on health and safety. Real-time information will be provided on situations ranging from weather-related emergencies to traffic alerts. Other notifications include amber alerts, school and government delays and closings, and specific instructions regarding protective measures or instructions.

The Office of Emergency Management’s Education and Outreach Section provides detailed emergency preparedness information to help residents and businesses take a proactive approach to be vigilant about preparedness. Prince George’s County’s Preparedness Center offers lots of online resources for families that educate on how to make a family plan for a potential emergency situation, what to do during an emergency, be it fire, natural hazards such as flooding, thunderstorms, tornadoes, winter storms, earthquakes, and others.  They provide basic tips and reminders for everyday practices such as developing a 72-hour disaster supply kit, creating a shelter in place plan, conducting a home safety checklist, being aware of your surroundings and reporting suspicious activity, and much more.

Now more than ever, it’s important to be proactive, be prepared, get connected, and stay informed about potential threats of danger and hazards. After all, 2020 is unlike any other year we’ve experienced.
