Bowie State Football Receives Fourth-Consecutive NCAA DII During the CIAA Championship Game

The Bowie State University football team has something to celebrate. The entire athletic program is winning from all angles. Recently, the varsity football team earned a berth into the NCAA Division II Super Region Two playoffs for the fourth-straight season after claiming its third consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Football Championship. They beat out Fayetteville State University by a final score of 17-7 at Salem Stadium in Virginia on November 13.

“It’s an honor to be able to host a NCAA playoff game against a very good opponent in Lenoir-Rhyne,” said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson. “Our players and staff have done an amazing job all year to put us in position to play in front of our home crowd in a NCAA playoff game.”

Winning the championship also brought on other victory titles. The Bulldogs claim historic three-peat, a term used in North American sports, which means winning three consecutive championships. Three-peat is a portmanteau of the words ‘three’ and ‘repeat,’ originated with the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association, during their unsuccessful campaign for a third consecutive championship during the 1988–89 season, having won the previous 2 NBA Finals.

As far as the Bowie State football players on the team, it was the local residents who scored some of their outstanding plays. Senior Calil Wilkins of Temple Hills was named the 2021 Food Lion CIAA Most Valuable Player after rushing for 163-yards on 25 carries. Senior Ja’rome Johnson (Washington, D.C.) threw seven complete passes for 99-yards and two touchdowns, while receivers in graduate senior Victor Olayinka of Glenarden and redshirt sophomore Quron Winder of Baltimore both caught a touchdown pass. Defensively, graduate senior Myles Wolfolk of Largo registered a season-high 11 total tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble while redshirt sophomore Jonathan Ross (Waldorf, MD) added 10 tackles, 3.5 tackle for losses and two sacks.
