Curbside Groceries
Capital Area Food Bank Launches Curbside Groceries Program
It’s no secret that the county has several food desert communities, making it almost impossible for residents to access healthy food options. With the help of the Capital Area Food Bank’s Curbside Groceries Program, residents can pull-up to the mobile grocery truck and access fresh and affordable groceries when a neighborhood grocery store is simply not an option.
“This is one of the innovative ways we are working to address food insecurity and food deserts in our county. We want to thank the Capital Area Food Bank, the County Council, Giant Foods, and UnitedHealthcare for partnering with us to bring this new program to our County,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in her recent newsletter.
Soon, residents will be able to spot the refrigerated truck, filled with locally grown vegetables, fruit, dairy, meats, and fish. The Curbside Groceries Program will help increase access to quality, healthy food for residents in areas where options are limited.
The food is affordable, but not free. When arriving to the truck, the food bank will assist families in shopping for healthy, reasonably priced food that is within the family budget.
No official schedule has been released yet, but the truck is expected to go to communities that are considered food deserts at least three times per week. The county is going to provide information on where to go when the program begins.
