Laurel Marks 25 Years Since Terrorism Came To The Nation With Remembrance, Reflection and Community History

Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks changed America forever, Laurel will come together to remember the lives lost, preserve local memories, and give a new generation an opportunity to understand how that historic day touched the nation and the community.

The Laurel Historical Society, in partnership with the City of Laurel, will commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with a series of programs and a special temporary exhibition designed around remembrance and reflection.

The observance begins September 10 with a hybrid community event offering residents an opportunity to reflect on September 11 and share their personal stories 25 years later. Those memories will be recorded and preserved in the Laurel Historical Society archives, creating a permanent record for future generations. The program will take place in person at the Laurel Municipal Center and will also be livestreamed.

On September 11, the City of Laurel will hold a commemorative event at the Laurel Municipal Center honoring the people whose lives were lost in the attacks.

The remembrance will extend to the Laurel Museum, where a temporary exhibition will explore Laurel’s direct connections to the tragedy. Visitors will also be invited to contribute their own thoughts and memories to a remembrance book—adding personal voices to the historical record.

For the Laurel Historical Society, which has spent more than 50 years preserving and sharing the city’s architectural and cultural history, the anniversary offers an especially meaningful opportunity to document not simply what happened nationally, but how September 11 became part of Laurel’s own story.

The Laurel Museum is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and admission is free.
