The 14th Edition of the Beltway BBQ Showdown, a Kansas City BBQ Showdown (KCBS) Master Series Event, rocked the Show Place Arena Equestrian Center on Sunday, June 2. DMV grillmasters competed to show off their barbeque skills and snag a spot in the American Royal Competition in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sydney Harrison, (D-District 9 southern Prince George’s County) councilman and Vice Chair of the Prince George's County Council attended the event.

“It's a great collaboration through Park and Recreations to ensure and really highlight what our park services offer — bringing the community together, understanding that we have more in common than [differences],” Harrison said. “[This event] really dives into what makes us great in the DMV region, which is the sound of our music, Go-Go. As you know, we have a lot of local bands here playing here today, and then we have Black Alley coming later on, which will be a real treat for everyone.”

More than 1,200 guests gathered to stroll among the hickory smoke and enjoy live performances from Future Band DC, New Impressionz, , DJ Elektrk and an ultimate line dance party led by Saundra, instructor of Style & Rhythm Line Dancers. Black Alley headlined bringing their unique mix of rock, hip-hop and go-go to the Show Place Arena.

Competitors cooked chicken, pork ribs, pork and brisket. Competition BBQ was not available to attendees as teams needed six portions for judging, but vendors offered food for everyone.

Wolfs Revenge BBQ took the top prize of $3,000, beating 18 other teams with a score of 705.0972 points. Smokin’ Skullies was second, at 702.8116. Scores of 700 or higher won a special award from the Kansas City BBQ Showdown. Wolf’s Revenge is entered in a pool with other Grand Champions from Maryland KCBS Masters Series Events and is eligible to be drawn from the pool to represent Maryland.

Six judges evaluated each entry. The top five scores are added together for a final total. The Showdown had four tables of 6 active judges and a judge facilitator. All judges take classes and train to earn a spot as judge.

Winners for individual meats were as follows. Individual Meat Scores of 180.0000 receive additional awards and recognition from KCBS.

“I’m really excited about watching the evolution of Park and Recreation and just seeing how the services, are going right into the community to make sure people know the type of resources they offer: from sports programming to recreational facilities, to the type of programs people can sign up for. Whether you're young, middle-aged, seasoned, golden age, they have something for you. We're all a part of the community, and that's what makes us great,” Harrison says.
