Breaking The Silence
Councilmember Wanika Fisher Urges Public to Help Break the Silence on Domestic Violence
Capitol Heights, MD — Prince George’s County Councilmember Wanika Fisher, Esq., a steadfast advocate for public safety and human rights, will lead efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence during the “Together We Can Break the Silence” motorcade on Saturday, August 23. The event, organized by the nonprofit Together We Can, begins at 12:30 p.m. at Capitol Heights Station and concludes at Trinidad Baptist Church, where a community gathering will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fisher will deliver opening remarks at the community portion of the event.
Known for her work in police reform and as Vice Chair of the Council’s Health, Human Services, and Public Safety Committee, Councilmember Fisher has made addressing domestic violence a key legislative and advocacy priority. Her participation in this weekend’s motorcade underscores her commitment to creating safer communities across Prince George’s County. “Breaking the silence means standing up for survivors and supporting the resources they need,” Fisher stated in advance of the event.
The motorcade and community event will also feature appearances by At-Large Councilmember Calvin S. Hawkins II, County Sheriff John Carr, officers from multiple police departments, and community leader Jeanette Brandon, President and CEO of Together We Can. The organization works to elevate public awareness and facilitate community-led solutions to prevent domestic abuse.
Councilmember Fisher’s advocacy aligns with her broader mission to uplift underserved residents, including women, minorities, and senior citizens, through policy reform and civic engagement. Residents are encouraged to attend the event, stand in solidarity, and learn how they can help prevent and respond to domestic violence in their own neighborhoods.
