2020 has shown us that technology is the backbone of our everyday lives. Between remote work, virtual learning and everything in between, we are reliant on our online profiles, mobile hotspots and electronic devices. But when it comes to managing those technologies, who tends to be the head honcho in the home?

According to a recent survey performed by NordVPN, a leading VPN service provider used by over 14 million internet users, 54% of women claim they are responsible for tech decisions and troubleshooting in the home. However, when asked the same question, 75% of men feel they rule the roost on tech-related issues.

But it’s about more than just gender. Based on the survey of 2,000 respondents across the U.S and Germany, when it comes to tech-related questions - age is more than just a number. Younger women are twice as likely to ask their parents for help, and all respondents between the ages 19 and 24 still primarily depend on their parents for tech-related support. On the other end of the spectrum, 45- to 74-year-old women tend to delegate troubleshooting to their children, while men are less likely to do so.

So, who tends to be the better in-home tech expert?

According to NordPass research, women may be better at cybersecurity and protecting themselves online for three main reasons: They’re more likely to ask for help, they’re more concerned about the potential harm if they’re hacked and they’re more likely to use unique passwords than men.

Regardless of gender or age, taking responsibility for household technology is trending up.

“The ever-growing demand for cybersecurity tools like VPN signals the rising awareness of the need to be protected online,” said NordVPN’s digital privacy expert Daniel Markuson. “This is a comforting trend, as more and more people take precautions to protect their netizenship.”
